Creating Balance in Private Practice

How do we manage everything that we have to do in private practice? Most of us find ourselves in murky water with where to start and what to focus on. If you have already launched your practice, then you know what I’m talking about. If you are still thinking about launching, take note. Either way, now is the time to create balance in life to enhance your creativity, fuel your passion, and maintain your work/life balance.

Mindset of Business Ownership

Our first step toward success in private practice is to acknowledge the different parts we must embody to be successful in business. Most meet their practice with the mindset of a therapist and realize we have more to accomplish then just meet with our clients. If you didn’t know, running a successful business requires that we not only work IN our business, as a therapist, but we must work ON our business, as the CEO. When you think of running a successful business, what roles come to mind? List them out now: therapist, CEO, content writer, accountant, biller, social media manager, graphic designer, compliance officer, receptionist, and the list goes on. Challenging yourself to grow into the mindset of business ownership provides direct willingness to engage in the roles and manage the responsibilities of each role.

Working “ON”  Business Ownership

There are two perspectives in business: working IN your business and working ON your business. Create balance by working ON your business. In other words, you are showing up as the CEO and not the doer in your private practice. This bird's eye perspective, high above the to-dos, supports your ability to see how things are functioning. The CEO creates and tracks systems & processes, reviews operations & how things are functioning, as well as, makes visionary/future business decisions for ongoing success. The CEO needs scheduled time and space to be successful in this role, as well as, having the ability to implement and execute. Start off on the right foot, become the oak tree and not the leaf blowing in the wind.

Action in Business Ownership

What does ACTION actually look like in business when you have mastered the CEO mindset? Two key words: joyful productivity. Follow the suggestions and create balance in private practice!

Step 1: Plan as much of your business as possible.

Get comfortable with structure, planning, and follow-through. Since we wear so many hats in private practice,  it’s imperative that effort and focus are effective and productive.

Step 2: Pull from your therapist skills and use them to support the CEO in action.

You manage the whole experience of your clients as a therapist from scheduling, preparing, billing, chart maintenance, and so on. Extend these skills to support your role as the business owner in private practice.

Step 3: Schedule a weekly STRATEGY SESSION.

Think of your business as a new client that needs your attention, skill, and care. You meet a client consistently, now you can meet your new client consistently as well. A strategy session is sacred, it doesn’t get replaced with other things. This is the time to execute the role and responsibility of a CEO.

Step 4: Show up to your strategy session ready to work ON your business.

Now you get to review systems/processes (or create them). Think clinical process, marketing strategies, data analytics, identifying when you will engage and implement your tasks/to do’s. Plan as much as you can and as a result, you will transform being the leaf blowing in the wind into the oak tree.
