The Fundamentals of Launching a Private Practice Successfully Part I
If you are to the point in your career where you are considering opening your own private practice, you likely already have the therapy part of your job down. While your education and training have equipped you with the knowledge and skills to provide effective therapy, stepping into the role of a business owner requires a completely different mindset. Launching a successful private practice means embracing both your therapeutic expertise and your ability to strategically manage a business. This can be incredibly scary, especially if you don’t know where to start.
While I don’t want to imply that starting a business is by any means “easy,” here are some fundamentals to make getting started a little less intimidating.
Find Your Business Name
Choosing the right name for your private practice is more than just an exciting creative task—it’s an essential business decision. Your business name reflects who you are, what you do, and the values your practice stands for. It can be tempting to just slap a name on your business to start and change it later. I encourage you to take your time to get it right the first time, since rebranding a business entails more than just adjusting the name. Slow down. Take your time deciding. It will save you frustration in the long run.
Tips for Naming Your Business:
Be Reflective: Take time to consider how your name fits with your practice's identity and long-term vision. Consider how potential clients will interpret the name. What message are you sending with the name you choose?
Be Creative: Think outside the box to come up with something unique that resonates with you and your future clients. Don’t stick to a naming convention just because other practices are doing it. Make it yours.
Do Your Research: Google potential names to make sure they aren’t already being used by another business. Check social media too. Not all businesses have searchable websites, so a social media search may provide different results. Do not skip this step! It's important to have a name that’s distinct and not too similar to existing practices to avoid confusion (and legal issues).
Remember, your name is often your first impression—make it count!
Find What You Stand For
Craft Your Vision Statement
Your vision statement serves as the big picture—an aspirational goal for what you hope to achieve with your private practice in the long term. It’s not (necessarily) measurable or achievable, but it should be inspiring and reflect your deepest ambitions. When writing your vision statement, think about the impact you want your practice to have on the world. This may seem like a lofty and irrelevant step, but it will help you zoom out and stay focused on the end dream when making decisions about your practice.
Craft Your Mission Statement
Your mission statement is a more practical expression of what you do day-to-day. It outlines who you serve, what problem you solve, how you solve it, and why it matters. This statement provides clarity and focus for both you and your clients.
Start with this template:
"I help (this person) solve (this problem) by (doing this) so that (the reason).”
A good mission statement helps keep your services aligned with your core purpose and lets clients know exactly how you can help them.
Define Your Core Values
Your core values are the foundation of your practice. They inform your practice’s culture, decision-making, and client interactions. When defining your values, think about what principles guide your work as a therapist and as a business owner.
By defining your values, you ensure that both you and your clients have a clear understanding of what your practice stands for. Aligning your business with your values will ultimately help you attract your ideal clients.
Find your People
Not everyone is your client—and that’s okay! Identifying your ideal client will help you tailor your services, branding, and marketing to attract the people you are most equipped to help. Ask yourself:
Who do I enjoy working with?
What specific challenges or issues do they face?
What solutions can I offer to help them overcome these challenges?
Having a clear understanding of your ideal client will allow you to focus your efforts on attracting the right people to your practice.
Write your Business Plan
You might be tempted to skip this step and "wing it," but trust me—writing a business plan is essential. A well-thought-out business plan sets the foundation for your practice, helping you plan ahead, stay organized, and track your growth over time. It doesn’t have to be long or complicated, but it should cover key areas such as:
Your services: What will you offer? Individual therapy, couples therapy, workshops?
Your pricing model: Will you accept insurance? Will you offer reduced fee pricing?
Marketing and client acquisition: How will you get your name out there and attract clients?
Financial projections: What are your income goals? What will your expenses look like?
Once your business plan is in place, it becomes easier to refine your offerings, set your pricing, develop your marketing strategies, visual branding and website, and ultimately launch your practice!

These steps will get you started and will inform the rest of your launch. Take your time determining who you are as a business owner. It will help everything else fall into place down the road.
