Loving Your Private Practice: How to Nurture Your Business This Season

Love is in the air! Valentine’s Day fills the entire month with an air of love and mushy romantic feelings. There tends to be a rush for roses, heart shaped chocolates, and large declarations of dedication and passion. Restaurants overflow with reservations and there are so many ads for the best way to show your significant other that you, in theory, put time and energy into planning an unforgettable evening. However, there are so many more facets of love that can be showcased during this Season of Love! Love of friends, family, pets, and self are just as important! And guess what? So is love for your private practice that you have worked so hard to create.

Who Do You Love?

Love isn’t a term we often apply to businesses, but your relationship with your private practice as a business entity is just like any other relationship. It needs to be nurtured. So what does showing love to your business look like? Well, there are a few different components to your business that deserve a little TLC.

Your Processes

You may have already given your business processes a once over in the new year and evaluated whether or not your software and subscriptions are still serving your business, or whether they are just another bill. But you will need to keep that up year round! Making sure your processes are running smoothly will not only help your future self, but your team if you have one.

Your Team

Speaking of your team, now is a great time to show them some love too! Whether you run a group practice or you outsource tasks to a contractor, take some time to show your appreciation this month!  Investing in your team makes the whole business better. This doesn’t mean you need to be going out and buying gifts and sweet treats for everyone, but you can show your appreciation through your words, or providing new development opportunities.

Your Clients

Your Private Practice is ultimately built to serve your clients, so they deserve some love and appreciation too!

The Owner

Yes, you, the owner! You work hard to keep your private practice running. Don’t forget to show yourself a little love and care this Valentine’s Season! You’ve earned it! Plus, investing in yourself can make all the difference in your business outcomes.

Love is a Verb

It’s one thing to say that you love your private practice, but love is only a feeling unless it is fueled by actions! There are many different ways you can love your business with actions! It can be hard to know where to start. Just in case you need a few ideas, here is a non-exhaustive list of small, actionable steps. They range from practical, to fun, to restorative:

  • Make sure your paperwork is up to date.

  • Review your SOPs for accuracy.

  • Hire a speaker or trainer for team development!

  • Update your website.

  • Refresh your marketing strategy.

  • Invest in a Private Practice Consultant.

  • Research new networking opportunities.

  • Give work colleagues and clients notes filled with what you appreciate about them.

  • Shout out your team in your business newsletter!

  • Take time to spruce up your office space

  • Hire someone to take on repetitive tasks that are taking up your time.

  • Take an afternoon off to rest and refresh.

  • Finish one task that you have been putting off, so you can refocus on other things.

  • Take a short break and move your body before locking back in.

  • Make a list of 5 things that are going well with your business!

  • Sign up for a workshop or seminar to nurture your professional skills.

  • Sign up for a workshop or class to nurture your own interests outside of work.

  • Sign up for a workshop or class to nurture your close relationships (The Beyond Words Series is great for couples)

  • Take some time to remember why you started this business in the first place.

Keep the Love Going

While the Season of Love is a great time to show love to your business, it is important that you periodically do this all year round. Whether it’s taking the time to audit your processes, show appreciation to the people who make your private practice possible, or filling your own cup, your business will require some TLC beyond the month of February. Your practice is worth it and deserves as much love and attention as any other relationship. Nurture it, and it will grow.
