Is Now the time to launch Your Private Practice?

Is it now or when you’re ready?

There is a pulse in the air with the turn off the new year. You know the one…New Year, New You! Perhaps you’ve been dreaming about launching a private practice or maybe you have started to get things together. This might be your time for a new you…becoming a business owner. Yes, a business owner! If you are contemplating whether now is the right time to start a private practice or you have begun to collect all the things to open for business, begin with a healthy business habit: the Review and Renew focus in business.

More often than not, this work gets skipped, which then creates road blocks when it comes time to grow your business. Believe it or not, when you look at relationship development, we start self to self and then we slowly branch out to then being full-hearted and fully embodied in our relationships, but we start with ourselves first. What relationship, you ask? I’m talking about the relationship with a new identity: the private practice owner. Do your future self a favor: review, review, and review some more. The more you check in with yourself, the easier it is to share your passion with your community, which tends to be an intimidating act when getting started.

1 Review your willingness, not readiness

Stepping into business is very exciting. The potential is limitless even though it can be daunting and overwhelming. I've been there and I've worked with so many colleagues who state, “Help me! I feel like I’m floating around and there are all these moving parts to get together". To get the ball rolling, review your willingness not readiness. Willingness allows curiosity to work for you. Curiosity to research the steps to launching a business, or what it takes to open a private practice. Willingness helps us keep our negative self-talk at bay as well. When we don’t reach for information, we fall in to the trap of thinking we are not good enough. I’m here to remind you that YOU ARE ENOUGH and extremely talented! You’ve already earned your degree. So, when you are willing, you can accomplish anything. Don’t cringe, but I’ll say it now: When there’s a will, there’s a way! Willingness provides a doorway for growth and development, motion forward. Tracking readiness slows us to a complete halt because we're rarely 100% ready when we're doing something new.

2 Review your vision

What is the vision for your life? What are your dreams? What do you want? What is your ideal work week, work day? How many weeks of vacation do you take? Who do you work with or serve? These questions can rattle some. The more you allow yourself to want and dream, the more successful you will be. This doesn’t mean the work is complete with visionary work. It’s a start and you are the one who defines your life. Some ask, “why is this important?” Part of the growth into your new identity of a business owner is growing into the CVO: Chief Visionary Officer. If you didn't know, you’ve made it to the C-Suite! As mentioned, we start with ourselves first then we branch out to others. When you are the private practice owner, it’s only your vision that counts. It’s so much easier to get to where you want to go if you decide where that place is first.

If you don’t have a notebook to collect your thoughts, get one. How do you feel when thinking about your vision? Breathe it in…there are no limits when dreaming. This is the fuel that will see you through your journey from point A to point B. Create the space, write down your thoughts, so when it’s time to get into action, your body has already been there since you visualized it.

3 Review your WHY?

What brought you to being a helping professional in the first place? Who or what inspired you to go to grad school? What happens when you give yourself the space to go back to the beginning. Did you notice how glad you are to not have to write a thesis or take the NCE exam again?! All kidding aside, as you completed your training, you grew and developed into becoming a therapist. Now, there is potential of growing and developing again; growing into a private practice owner. Connecting to your why will provide clarity and direction when deciding if now is the time to launch into private practice. Grab a notebook and continue to write your thoughts down. Your time and focus won’t go to waste! This work will be “repurposed” (a marketing term that simply means you will use this content again in a different place), so write clearly 😉 Here are some questions to answer:

  1. Why do you want to launch a private practice?

  2. Who do you want to work with and why?

  3. What matters most in life and why?

  4. How does a private practice get you closer to living your vision?

  5. How does launching now support your growth and development?

4 Renew

Pause and take a breath. Sit with your thoughts and/or the thoughts you wrote down. Take a moment to congratulate yourself- you did some great work! Connect with your willingness, your inspiration, your vision, and your why. Renew your goals with gained clarity so there is congruence between your vision and action. The business practice of Review and Renew supports clarity, provides direction, and enhances passion-driven action. You are one step closer to turning your dreams into reality!
