How to Spring Clean Your Private Practice
Spring is here! Flowers will soon be in bloom, and it’s a great reminder of rebirth and renewal. Of course, spring is also a time to refresh and engage in healthy habits. Just like your closet needs attention, so does your private practice. A good spring cleaning for your private practice is the ticket to intentional growth toward success.
To Spring Clean, or Not to Spring Clean
Spring cleaning can mean different things to different people. Doing a big overhaul of your business processes can be daunting, and might not be necessary in all cases. A cleaning can range from a quick spruce to make sure everything is functioning well and nothing is extraneous, all the way up to those big daunting overhauls. But how do you decide how much work needs to be done?
Do Some Inventory
It can be really helpful to actually map out your private practice. The day to day of running your own business can get you stuck in the weeds and not be able to see the big picture frequently. List out all your business systems and processes so you can begin to identify your operations in your private practice. Additionally, write out your business mission, vision, and your “why”. These will guide you through the rest of the spring cleaning.
Ask Some Questions
Now that you have all your business workings listed in front of you, you can start to organize it intentionally and methodically.
Start evaluating your spring clean by asking yourself these questions:
Does your current business blueprint align with your mission, values and vision?
What is already working well in your private practice?
What activities/services bring in the most revenue?
What activities/services bring in the least revenue?
What activities/services bring you the most joy?
What activities/services bring the most stress/less joy?
Are you meeting your target market?
How would you run your private practice if it was guaranteed to work?
Could you use a fresh pair of eyes to support you?
This list of questions is not exhaustive. You may have other questions in mind. Go ahead and ask them! Just tackle one question at a time to avoid overwhelm.
Call in Reinforcements
The reason most of us avoid spring cleaning is because it can quickly become overwhelming. You are the full-time provider. You also know you need to work ON your business, but don’t know where to find the time. We can get filled with self-doubt about our business, or whether we will have the time to finish this project once it gets started. You aren’t alone!
Private practice therapists, just like any other business owner, should never exist in a vacuum. You and your business are worth investing time to get it right. If you have no idea where to start, or you have been doing what is easiest at the time, a private practice consultant can be the key to getting your spring clean completed thoroughly, and keeping you on track.
Not only is having a consultant on board more productive, but it can also help you overcome the overwhelm and self-doubt that you can face owning a private practice. You worked with a clinical supervisor when working toward your licensure. Why stop this mindset when building and growing your private practice? You may want to consider working with a private consultant!
Benefits of Private Practice Consultation
Personalized Attention
When you own your own business, your attention is always elsewhere. You don’t always have time to focus on yourself as a business owner. A consultant is there to give YOU the personalized attention you need to be successful. Your business has unique needs, so a one-size-fits-all approach may slow your growth.
Additionally, the barriers that you personally need to overcome as a business owner are unique to only you! You tailor treatment plans for each of your individual clients, so why should the support you receive be any different? You. Deserve. Tailor made. Support.
Accountability
Running a private practice requires multiple hats worn and strong time management skills. And when you are doing it alone, it can be really difficult to stay on track if there isn’t anyone there to hold you accountable. A consultant is there to help you not only set your goals, but keep you accountable each step of the way to achieving them. It’s a lot harder to forget or push back deadlines if you have someone rooting for you to stick to the deadlines as originally planned!
Gain Confidence as a Business Owner
Many therapists and counselors who run a private practice feel like they have no idea what they’re doing as a business owner. No surprise here! You were trained in best practices in counseling, not in business administration, marketing, or sales. Owning a business is an entirely different set of skills that you may not have been taught. This leaves many private practice owners feeling overwhelmed, full of self-doubt, and very alone in their journey.
Arguably, the most important part of a consultant’s role is helping you shift your mindset and challenge your limiting beliefs about yourself. A consultant is your cheerleader, your non-judgemental guide, and your safe space to ask questions. No matter how much previous experience you have being a therapist, running a business is not therapy. You are capable of gaining these skills NOW. You. Can. Do. This.
Spring Into Action!
Once you bust through the self-doubt and overwhelm, you will be amazed at how much you can accomplish for your private practice. Limiting beliefs are, well, limiting. They have been holding you back for far too long, and spring is a perfect time to clear out those limiting beliefs! Do a clean sweep of all the things holding you back in your business, because your private practice and YOU are worth the fresh start.
